On Monday, June 9, we will occupy the streets in the largest disobedient demonstration in the Nordic countries to date. By concentrating our forces in one place, we will create maximum pressure on decision-makers. We intend to stay on the streets and continue building pressure for several days. Through long-term commitment, we will demonstrate the existential severity of the situation and bring the climate crisis into public debate. If necessary, we are prepared for arrests – history has shown that when pressure to act shifts from police to politicians, change can begin. The world is burning and everything we love is at stake
We are living in a time of climate collapse, and the worst scenarios are becoming reality. The world’s average temperature has exceeded the 1.5-degree limit defined in the Paris Climate Agreement for the second consecutive year. Right now, we are in danger of derailing the climate system.
What is the response of Finland’s government and society? The government claims to be cutting healthcare, culture, and social support to secure a good life for future generations, but at the same time, it is pouring 4 billion in funds to the very actors who are burning our future.
The government is not only breaking climate law – it is dismantling the entire climate law. In the midst of this catastrophe, the government is adding fuel to the flames by allowing record-breaking logging that is transforming our forests from carbon sinks into emission sources. Over the past thirty years, our emissions have barely decreased. The scientific community, led by the Climate Panel, is calling for rapid emission cuts and logging restrictions, but with the support of the forest industry, some government parties are prepared to dismantle the climate law and abandon the 2035 target.
We have the right to life and the right to rebel. At this crucial moment, we have the right to protect ourselves, our future, and our loved ones. The storm has already risen, and the time for warnings is over. We will not stand by and watch as the conditions for our lives and those of billions of others are destroyed.
Extinction Rebellion’s demands to the government:
1. Cut destructive subsidies, not our future!
Everyone should have the right to livelihood, social and healthcare services, education, and culture. Cuts must be directed at the four billion in environmentally and climatically harmful subsidies.
2. No backtracking on the climate law!
The climate catastrophe is accelerating – we absolutely cannot abandon the 2035 carbon neutrality target. Finland must do its part to achieve global climate justice.
3. Stop forest destruction, grow natural forests!
Logging must be returned to sustainable levels, as our forests must be carbon sinks, not emission sources. Forest biodiversity must be saved.

It’s time to gather all our skills, strength, and resources together and channel them into a genuine force for change, the largest and most impactful climate disobedience campaign in the Nordic countries to date. Last year, we initiated about 1,200 new rebels and multiplied both our participant numbers and organizational capacity. New community groups such as Culture Rebellion, Middle Class Rebellion, Engineering Student Rebellion, and Father Rebellion have emerged, and local groups are being established across Finland. Previous Extinction Rebellion campaigns in the Netherlands and Britain have created significant political pressure and concrete victories when they have exceeded the milestone of 10,000 participants – we now have a unique opportunity to do the same in Finland!
